As Automation Engineer / Project Engineer for the Digital Manufacturing & Data Lab 100% (m/w/d), you will play a central role in building, operating, and advancing our laboratory environment for digital manufacturing solutions. You will combine expertise in process automation, simulation, and lab infrastructure to enable engineers, data scientists, and developers to design, test, and deploy innovative solutions.

With a strong focus on PCS7-based automation systems, SIMIT simulations, and lab infrastructure, you will act as a technical allrounder bridging automation, IT/OT development systems, and user enablement. Your work will directly support experimentation, prototyping, and scaling of digital and automation solutions across TechOps and manufacturing.

Your Tasks:

  • Design, implement, and maintain the Digital Manufacturing & Data Lab infrastructure, including automation systems, virtualized environments, and network setups
  • Develop, configure, and support Siemens PCS7 systems (incl. WinCC, Simatic Batch) for lab and pilot environments
  • Build and maintain simulation capabilities and digital twins using SIMIT, enabling virtual commissioning, testing, and training scenarios
  • Administer and operate lab IT/OT infrastructure, including virtualization, systems, and network components
  • Integrate controllers, field devices, and lab equipment into cohesive automation and data environments
  • Provide and maintain internal tools, templates, and automation libraries for users of the lab
  • Support users (engineers, data scientists) in utilizing lab systems for experiments, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Participate in automation and digitalization projects, from requirements gathering to prototyping and implementation
  • Maintain system documentation, ensure configuration management, and support testing activities where applicable
  • Identify opportunities to improve the lab environment and introduce new technologies and best practices

Your Profile:

  • University degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field
  • Hands-on experience with process control systems, ideally Siemens PCS7, WinCC, and Simatic Batch, as well as simulation tools such as SIMIT or similar platforms
  • Solid understanding of automation hardware, PLCs, controllers, field instrumentation, system integration, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., OPC UA, Profinet, Modbus)
  • Practical knowledge of IT/OT infrastructure, including virtualization, Windows administration, TCP/IP networking, virtual environments (e.g., VMware, Proxmox), and network segmentation in lab setups
  • Exposure to data systems (e.g., historians, MES, analytics platforms), their integration with automation systems, and experience in virtual commissioning and digital twin approaches
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work across disciplines, act as a technical allrounder, and translate user needs into practical technical solutions
  • Dedicated, self-driven, structured, and collaborative personality with a hands-on mindset; solid knowledge of German is considered a strong plus

Our offer:

  • A dynamic and growing work environment with internal development opportunities
  • Support through internal and external training opportunities
  • 60% employer contribution to the pension fund and the option for additional voluntary savings
  • Access to the Swibeco benefits platform with discounts at external partners
  • Fresh, healthy meals in our staff restaurant and a variety of free sports activities on campus
